Under the Skin - artsy sci-fi horror. If you like 2001, you'll appreciate this.
Ex Machina - sci-fi thriller. Explores the philosophical questions raised by artificial intelligence through a very gripping battle of wits between an everyman, an inventor, and a robot.
Blue Ruin - no fancy stuff. Just a great revenge thriller.
Thanks! We watched "Ex Machina" the other day and I liked it, the way they explored the AI topic was very interesting. We ended up watching "Gone Girl" tonight but I'll save the suggestions for another day! I can see that "Under the Skin" doesn't have such a great score on IMDB, what would you consider to be its strongest and weakest aspects?
Strengths: cinematography, soundtrack
Weakness: It's an art film.
It's really best not to worry about user ratings. They're relatively meaningless. Reading the reviews on IMDB will show you that people thought it was boring, slow-paced, and hard to follow. These are the people who watched it expecting little more than to see Scarlett Johansson naked. It has an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, so critics tended to love it. If 2001 is one of your favorite movies, then you should be able to handle it.
I usually agree with the user scores on IMDB so I find it a good way of telling if I'm going to enjoy the movie or not. But of course, this isn't always the case and because I read some of the negative reviews and they mostly classified the movie as 'slow paced' (which always makes me wonder if the person was expecting an action movie with a limited story) I thought perhaps this was one of those exceptions.
