I just watched this the other night on Netflix. Horrible, horrible movie. Shitty scifi, shitty horror, bad acting, plot holes galore... I was committed so I finished it but I may have lost a few IQ points in the process!
it's one redeeming quality was the landscape shots, and general cinematography. I don't know what it is about Scott, but he either makes really good films, or horrible films, and it almost always has to do with the writing. He knows how to make a film look good.
However, "Shitty scifi, shitty horror, bad acting, plot holes galore" are all reasons why i haven't watched it since that one time. More films, and shows are stepping up their cinematography, so even the one thing it did well, has been matched. The one annoying thing is that Prometheus effectively put del Toro's At The Mountains of Madness on hold, no idea what the word is now.
I don't ever walk out of a movie. Maybe part of it is I read reviews so I set my expectations appropriately, and part of it is, hey, it's two hours, I can endure it.
Many years ago I saw some movie I don't remember, then slipped into a showing of David Cronenberg's Crash. Holy hell. I walked out about 45 minutes in, then stopped myself in the corridor. I reasoned that if a movie was getting such an intense reaction out of me that I would walk out, then it meant the movie was an effective one. So I went back in and watched the whole of it.
Case in point, I remember Crash vividly but can't remember what the hell was the movie I paid to see.
None of them. Even if it's a bad movie, I can never bring myself to disturb the other viewers by getting up. (Also because I don't want to feel like I wasted money, haha.)
I did cry sometimes. My wife doesn't like animation movies because they are childish, she didn't mention it was animated one time, and half into the movie, she said “这个电影还不错”,(this movie is alright, which is excellent in her parlance)
I am not Chinese. It is like any other relationship, but with our particular differences due to culture. Both sides need to be open minded and willing to adapt or otherwise would not work. Like everything else.
Thankfully, I didn't waste time in theater or anything, but family was watching, walked out 40mins in, then came back and ended up finishing it because I was actually in shock that the rest of the family hadn't turned the damn thing off. The plot holes in that thing were so massive, you could shove a Star Destroyer through. Boring, flat characters that had mood swings faster than anything I've ever seen. Generic and cliche moral quandaries that were actually very simple choices. They even boiled down an interesting science fiction survival story with a similar vibe to The Core... to a Freddy Kruger boggeyman climatic boss fight with a camera more fuzzy and shaky than Cloverfield.
Not to mention the "science" was... yeah, fiction. Mostly fiction, very little science.
Master and Commander, I used to go to the movies every week on Wednesday between 11am and noon during my senior year of high school. Only movie I have ever walked out on.

Prometheus. I was excited to watch it and left upset and disappointed about half way into it.

Huh, you are right about the imagery, it was an impressive movie for its sense of scale, especially the outside shots. Too bad for the vapid writing.

I haven't been in a cinema in years, but i would stop watching movies if I don't like them. Last one The Visit, I only lasted 20 minutes.

Disturbia. I lasted to the fake scare through the fence.
