That's still rather a manual process. I meant more like the new messages counter the site has going on, except it resets when you open the notifications pane.
We thought that having two event/message counters in one navigation bar was too much and felt the PM counter is the more important number to display. We are however open to ideas on how we can make the notification system better.
Personally, I don't think it would be too cluttered since the numbers would be next to their respective icons, but I can see how others could see otherwise. Perhaps it might be something worth putting to the community?
Failing that, something indicating that there are new notifications would also be nice, similar to reddit's famous 'orangered' envelope.
Also, I'm guessing red username means admin? Green is for moderators, then?

The notifications icons should glow white when there are new notifications. Are you not seeing the change in color?
Red = Super-Mods / Admins
Green = OP
Not as far as I've noticed but I'll keep an eye out for it.
I don't see that being a big deal. In fact, the notifications may be helpful. The only thing is that they should be easily discernible.
