Adding to this, it doesn't just follow some random people. It all depends on where you're coming from and what general content you chose to be of interest to you. The 17 followers you got is based on that content, you can of course unfollow everyone and keep your feed empty but damn it you shouldn't. Picklefingers made a good point, the feed is a superior way to track good content, just be sure you follow the people that share your interests....
