Yeah, the 12th of July celebrates a Protestant victory over Catholics at the Boyne. Primarily a cultural celebration of Protestant culture and parades are held by the Orange Order. A Parades Commission was set up to monitor where the marches could pass; in this case a the 'Catholic district' is Ardoyne. The march past Ardoyne is seen as incendiary and provocative (for obvious reason), so they were stopped from passing. Riots took place, 24 PSNI injured and one 16 year old girl run over by a car!
It's a fairly embarrassing time of the year for a lot of us here because of the trouble because it really doesn't reflect how amazing Belfast is. Such a great place to live, visit and generally be around!
