Daily Topic?

What do you guys think of a daily topic thread to spark conversation? I noticed the 2 truths and a lie thread was getting a lot of activity and thought it might be fun and a good way for community members to casually interact.

I think it's a great idea, but I foresee a challenge in getting people involved. What I realized in the topic I made is that we really don't have many members, and our interests vary. I don't think there'd be much motivation to check into a thread every day (much less twice a day as suggested below) to say hello to people you don't have much in common with. Today's coffee post was nice and got a lot of comments, but there weren't really any meaningful conversations. Not that everything has to be profound, but it feels like we're just fishing for comments for the sake of getting more people to comment.

Can we brainstorm a bit more and think of ways to get people engaged?

Edit: I think the reason my post did okay is that people got a chance to talk about themselves (which we like) and learn about each other. The "two truths and a lie" game added the important fun element and an incentive for people to talk to each other and return to the comments.

Maybe a good stimulus would be a question, but one that asks for somewhat interesting answers. "Did you do anything interesting today?"

Something I have noticed and this is true on any board, is that the vast majority of people lurk and don't participate. I am guilty of this myself on some places. I only post if I truly feel I have something to add. I tend to fair better on smaller boards for this reason. Otherwise I just feel like I'm echoing ten other people.

I do think asking people about themselves and their experiences is a good start. We can get to know each other and everyone can have something unique to share.

If we want to talk about how to get people submitting content. I can never figure out whats good or whats bad. But I do know that if I were to I'd want to know it'd get some kinda reaction, even a small one.

I wouldn't really consider the fact that there were no meaningful conversations in the Morning Coffee a bad thing. That's what chat threads are really for. And I think we need one. We either have a place to not have to worry about post quality and just be able to hang out online with friends or people will be tempted to spread the low quality commenting to the rest of the site. With the chat thread, we are able to point to a specific place to where low-quality commenting is allowed, instead of letting people get frustrated when they wan't to interact on Snapzu but don't want to expend a lot of effort. Maybe I'm just thinking back to my forum days, but these chat threads were always widely popular and a great corral for casual content.

        Yes, I absolutely agree.

I didn't really mean "low-quality" comments. I meant that there was no real motivation to keep talking to each other. But there's nothing wrong with that, like you said. It would just be ideal if we could stimulate people to really get them into it.

That's true. But the thing about it being daily is that even if you don't feel like posting on the thread that day, there is another the next.

And let me clarify what I meant by low-quality comments. I'm not saying that every comment we make should be maximum effort all the time. That would be ridiculous. We should all have fun. I'm talking about avoid conversations/snaps that amount nothing more to "I'm bored" "So am I" or, like a lot of the posts were today, people just posting about unimportant stuff from work. It would add nothing to any normal snap or tribe, but without a chat thread to post those little thoughts, they will spread to the rest of the site.

That was what I was planning on doing. Vague questions about interests or activities that people can answer about themselves in unique ways.

edit: I've also been looking up conversational games similar to the two truths one lie one

I think a good idea would be to ask stuff like "What's the weirdest/funniest/scariest thing that's happened to you?", the question is vague enough so everybody can participate and it can sprout some great stories. As well as stuff like "What would you do if tomorrow was the end of the world?", or something that's a little bit more specific and less extravagant like "What's your favorite movie/book/game and why?".

Awesome. We should try to mix up the questions/games if possible to keep things fresh. Lol.

I also liked the morning coffee thread today. I think we should have a daily post like that (Like maybe even call it the Morning Coffee) and then also have something like the 2 truths one lie from today.

The name morning coffee seems really nice, and a topic could be done being discussed in less than a day. Maybe there could be 2 discussion posts a day; Morning Coffee and Afternoon Tea?

Maybe one thread would be better so it's more likely that comments will get replies?

Yeah I think so, at least until the community gets bigger. The one from today seemed to last all day.

I really like that. Kinda reminds me of what the café was originally meant to be

It's great because there is so many different perspectives of people's different lives. And It's actually nice to read in the mornings.

I suggest we organize this thoroughly:

Will /u/White go into the task of organizing the daily topic each day?

Can we set the prefix before the topic, so people know which one it is?

We could also go with the name "Morning coffee", though it might not be at that time of the day for some people, surely.

I would love to organize it!

I think we could do maybe a Morning Coffee post in the morning and an Afternoon Tea post a bit later in the day?

the formatting of the titles could be "Morning Coffee - (date) - (topic).

I would also make it a new tribe but I feel that it would get more attention here in the lounge.

      • picklefingers
        +2

You could make a tribe that is restricted to only posts linking to the lounges Morning Coffee posts.

I think the great part about this site is that you don't have to restrict your post to a single tribe. You can post in the lounge and the tribe that you create at the same time!

unfortunately discussions are limited to a single tribe

I'd say once a week have a topic, say on the weekend...And yeah, lots of people do lurk instead of posting.

It's been a lot better since the new version came out. Also, there is the 90/9/1 internet rule where of 100 users, 90 lurk, 9 participate (voting, etc), and 1 posts. So there must be a lot of lurkers.
