A judge who swore at a defendant when he insulted her during sentencing has been cleared of judicial misconduct, despite a number of complaints from the public. Judge Patricia Lynch QC had a heated exchange with repeat offender John Hennigan at Chelmsford Crown Court in August, as she sentenced him for insulting a black Caribbean mother.

Texas loses patience, sues FDA for barring import of lethal injection drug
Texas officials filed a federal lawsuit against the Food and Drug Administration Tuesday following a 17-month stand-off with the agency over the legality of imported drugs the state intended to use for lethal injections. In July of 2015, Texas imported 1,000 vials of thiopental sodium, a barbiturate anesthetic that ensures rapid loss of consciousness when given in lethal cocktails. According to the court documents (PDF), the drugs came from an unnamed “foreign distributor." (However, Buzzfeed has reported they were from a questionable source in India.)

Missouri bill could get rid of mandatory minimum sentences
The 2017 Missouri General Assembly session, which begins on Wednesday, could bring a number of changes to state issues, including sentencing guidelines for certain criminals. House Bill 38, sponsored by State Rep. Galen Higdon (R – District 11), aims to get rid of mandatory minimum sentences in criminal cases involving non-violent or minor crimes. After working on the bill for the last few years, Higdon told 41 Action News that getting rid of mandatory sentences and “blanket punishments” could lead to fairer judgments.

Revenge pornography and cyber stalking are set to become illegal offences, after Cabinet approved the drafting of a Non-Fatal Offences (Amendment) Bill to address loopholes in current legislation. It follows a report from the Law Reform Commission in September, which dealt with harmful communications and digital safety. The commission determined there were potential gaps in criminal legislation with regard to "so-called revenge pornography and the publication of voyeuristic material without consent".

Californians won’t have to worry about being sued or arrested for breaking into a hot unattended car to rescue an animal under a new law taking effect in 2017. It takes just 10 minutes on an 80 degree day for temperatures inside a car to reach 120 degrees. Most people say if they saw a distressed animal trapped inside a parked car on a hot day they would take action to save it.
