Children testified that Salim Mohamed Wabwire taught them that Christians should be killed. FGM is child abuse, says UN Population Fund chief
The head of the United Nations Population Fund has, for the first time, described female genital mutilation as "child abuse". Dr Babatunde Osotimehin told the BBC that the custom was a human rights abuse and needed to end immediately. More than 200 million women and girls around the world have undergone the procedure, where parts of the female genitals are removed. The UN estimates a further three million are at risk of being mutilated.

On Friday, a Mombasa law court sentenced Feisal Mohamed Ali to 20 years in jail after finding him guilty of illegal possession of ivory worth 44 million shillings (US $440,000). The court also imposed a fine of 20 million shillings. Kenyan president commutes all death sentences to life in prison
President Uhuru Kenyatta commuted all death sentences in Kenya to life jail terms on Monday, removing 2,747 convicts from death row in a nation that has not executed anyone for about three decades. In addition to commuting the sentences of 2,655 men and 92 women, Kenyatta also signed pardon warrants to release 102 long-term serving convicts, the presidential State House said. Such pardons are granted to prisoners deemed reformed and rehabilitated, and found to be deserving of early release.

One of Africa's Last Great Tusker Elephants Was Killed by Poachers
One of Kenya's last great tusker elephants was reportedly shot and killed by poachers. During a routine flyover on January 4 by the conservation group Tsavo Trust in southern Kenya, the body of a famous, roughly 50-year-old African elephant known as Satao II was discovered, though news of his death was only announced Monday. While the cause of death has not been confirmed, conservationists believe he was killed by a poisoned arrow while feeding in the eastern region of the park. The area is known as a "poaching hot spot."
