The ‘garbage guy’ walks 12 miles a day around D.C. picking up trash: ‘I’ll pick up pretty much anything.’
Most people walk by trash they pass on streets and sidewalks. Some people don’t even notice it. Then there’s Billy Adams. He not only sees it, he picks it up — all of it. Since the spring, the 54-year-old Montgomery County man has spent his daily walks into the District collecting garbage around the city, usually filling at least two trash bags with waste.

Doing What You Love Is Going To Be Fucking Hard.
“Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” I’m not sure who said that. Like all quotes that we don’t know the origin of, it’s attributed to Confucius — but that’s probably inaccurate. In any case it’s truly one of the worst cliches I’ve ever come across, and one that causes people no end of grief. It’s pretty popular, and quoting it when discussing life choices has been in vogue for a while.

The Power of Decision
“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” For a long time I thought I understood this quote. It’s so straightforward, there seems little room for misinterpretation. And yet, there is. See, for many years, I thought Lao Tzu was saying that every journey begins with that first, single physical step. We put a foot out in front of us, lean forward slight, and then whoosh! Away we go.

This breathtaking sunset photo of a spaceship is a great example of perfect timing
If you need a break from whatever Earthly news is terrifying you today, might I suggest the stellar photo above? It’s even better in super high resolution — see for yourself. Click, breathe, and be awed. This is a picture of the Orbital Cygnus spacecraft as it approached the International Space Station this weekend. It’s not a fantastic image because of some particularly deft use of basic photographic technique. Rather, it stands apart because of the wonderful timing. Stress about the basics of photography all you want, but they’ll only get you so far without good timing and, sometimes, a little bit of luck.

In the Netherlands, Empty Prisons Become Homes for Refugees
In an interesting take on reusing and recycling, a government agency in the Netherlands has opened empty prisons to accommodate the influx of migrants seeking asylum. As the country’s crime rate and prison population have steadily declined for years, dozens of correctional facilities have closed altogether. So when the number of migrants started to rise—more than 50,000 entered the Netherlands last year alone—the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) saw a solution.

An open letter to the Whole Foods shoppers who consoled me when I learned of my dad’s suicide
Dear Strangers, I remember you. Ten months ago, when my cellphone rang with news of my father’s suicide, you were walking into Whole Foods prepared to do your grocery shopping, just as I had been only minutes before you. But I had already abandoned my cart full of groceries and I stood in the entryway of the store. My brother was on the other end of the line. He was telling me my father was dead, that he had taken his...
