This is actually a complex matter that spans across our platform creating general elements based on the content type that was selected. Changing the type of the content would break those elements. We are however looking into what we can do to make it more clear that a type should be selected before publishing.
I second that. I'm not sure why we can edit nearly everything else after publishing but not the content type.

You could start by having a pop up when we leave it as "unspecified" asking if that's what we really want to do...

Yeah because that is the thing that I pretty much always seem to forget. that and tags.
An issue is that reddit forces us to pick the tag after and old habits die hard so we forget to set it before.
