Say what you will about emoticons but everyone loves a little text character smile now and again! :) They carry a lot of weight around here and help keep the conversation from becoming hostile or overbearing, and it's just a couple characters! ^_^
Maybe I'm showing my age, but my emotional response to ^_^ is positive, whilst my emotional response to a little yellow circle with a face on is mild rage and a sense of disillusion. God, I'm a miserable bastard.
Personally? It would actually diminish my experience. Even text emoticons are a little tacky, but at least they're less dominating on a page.

Computer scientist myself and I have to say excessive use of tacky emoticons is my guilty pleasure :D ^-^ :P
