If there is to be emoticons, I'd like them all to have an ascii equivalent and being able to turn off the graphical representation in my preferences.
I understand the appeal to some but I find them personally repulsive.
I think that this compromise could make everyone happy. :)
Although you'd end up seeing a lot of dull, run of the mill ascii emotes if the feature existed, which would still clutter the place.
