The influence of street culture on art in Los Angeles has been systematically underrepresented by academia and art history. Although scholarly research has traced the origin of gang graffiti from the 1930s on, this aesthetic has been largely absent from the dialogue about the shaping of modern art. We know about the epic drama of World War II, but what about the jokes? The above video tells the story (as best as we can). The iconic piece of graffiti that was known, in America, as "Kilroy Was Here" traveled the world in a fashion remarkably similar to a modern meme.

One of the first graffiti artists in Paris, and has been described as the "Father of stencil graffiti".

In 2012 KCBR's sprayers were busy enhancing Zurich's cityscape and it's rail network. At the end of last year, they dropped a documentary of their endeavors into the mailbox of art publisher Edition Patrick Frey. Just a couple of weeks later, before the paint on the trains had even dried, their book Live Life Like KCBR was published.

Most accounts of the history of graffiti have the art form really taking off in the 1970s, but art historian C. Guichard dates its emergence to slightly earlier ,the 16th century. She chronicles her findings during time spent deciphering and dating the innumerable tags left on masterpieces by Raphael, Michelangelo, and others in the academies and palaces of Rome.

Today’s Metal Monday Post features the dope style of the writer Enue. Enue is one of the most talented writers from the East Coast and is even a member of Ironlak’s U.S.A. team. Enue also isn’t just seen on trucks, he also has a strong presence on freights. According to a interview from Ironlak, Enue’s career started in New York City.
