Sell me on the PS Vita.

I had one on release day.

Wasn't impressed with the following months of hardly any releases.

What games are great now? What would I expect as far as PS4 and Vita compatibility?

Thanks!

First of all, Sony marked the Vita as legacy device. So don't expect any more greatness.

However, if you like indies, then you're golden on the Vita. Especially with the monthly PS+ games! Big AAA titles are scarce unfortunatly. Take a look at http://www.metacritic.com/feature/25-best-playstation-vita-games for a list of games that are well received.

As for compatibility between PS4 and the Vita, the lack of R2 and L2 buttons on the Vita make it hard to play any game that actively uses those buttons. If you find a game that isn't relying on the shoulder buttons, then the experience is pretty good. There is no lag, and it looks amazing. I use it sometimes to play on the can :)

I wonder what the developer side of this is like. My team is currently shopping around for a platform to focus on for release and we thought the hardware of the vita would be a perfect compromise between the power and interface of a console, and portability

If you're a fan of JRPGs and Visual Novels, it has a bunch of great titles. Danganronpa, Persona 4 Golden, and Zero Escape were a few games that I sinked many hours into. I honestly don't use my Vita much anymore, but there's still games coming out for it that I'll be picking up in the future. And yeah, there's always Indies. Other than that it honestly isn't a very appealing system.

Which stinks because when I saw the Vita come out it seemed like it was well on its way to being the best hand held.

Agreed. It started with some really nice titles like Wipeout and Uncharted. It even had advertisements on TV!

The system will not be seeing any more AAA first parties now, but there are tonnes of indies available and loads more are coming out throughout the year. As others have mentioned, it's also amazing if you're a fan of JRPGs. It also has a large PS1 and PSP back-catalogue, which resulted in mine being a dedicated MGS machine for the entirety of last summer. It was a good summer.

As long as you don't go in expecting more first party titles like most of the Vita subreddit seemed to, you'll be in for a treat

You like RPGs? We got hella RPGs.

You wanna play on your ps4 but you're away from home? Use remove play and play though wifi. I've played FF type-0 on my PS4 though my vita on the other side of the country. Just need good wifi signal and you're golden!

I've had a vita for awhile now, and I am absolutely in love with it. I have owned a number of game consoles over the years, and I'm confident in saying that the vita has proved to be my absolute favorite. The key aspect for me, is the games. While there haven't been a large number of AAA - blockbuster titles for the system, there has been tons of absolutely incredible games. I'll list some of my favorites:

Persona 4 Golden - This game is almost universally acclaimed as the game to buy on Vita. In fact, it was the game that sold me on the vita in the first place. I had never played a Persona game before, but it proved to be an excellent starting point for me. It is a JRPG with pokemon-esque battling, and a strong social aspect. The gameplay is exciting and addictive, the story is tight and powerful, and the sound design is some of the best around. It's most certainly a hallmark vita game.

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair - This pair of games are an absolutely insane experience. If the idea of a bunch of students are forced to kill each other, in order to escape a crazy school, by a diabolical teddy bear intrigues you; this is your kind of game. While humorous, this game is absolutely gripping. The gameplay consists of several phases. In the first, you get to know the other students. Then a murder occurs, and it is a madrush to find clues. Afterwords, you work with your classmates to try to determine the killer Ace Attorney style.

Killzone: Mercenary - This is an excellent example of the power of the vita. Killzone: Mercenary runs on a modified version of the console's engine. The visuals are breathtaking, the action stunning, and has excellent gameplay. While the story is exceptionally short, the game is setup for replays very well. It is a hardcore FPS, unlike any other handheld I've experienced.

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva f Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F 2nd - These games really caught me by surprise. I had never heard of vocaloids, nor was I particularly fond of 'bullshit anime' games. Still, I was craving the 'press the button to the music' type of game that Hatsune Miku: Project Diva f was. I was blown away by how addictive the music is, and how addicting the gameplay is. The difficulty is scalable, but is absolutely brutal at the more difficult levels. If you enjoyed games similar to Rock Band and Guitar Hero, and want a similar type of game; these are an excellent pair to look at.

There are also some excellent ports. Guacamelee!, Rayman Origins, Spelunky, and Hotline Miami are all excellent examples, but there are a lot more. If mobile gaming is something you're looking for, there's really not a better way to play any of these games.

Remasters are also totally a thing. For newer gamers who may not have experienced some of the greats, this is an excellent option. Final Fantasy X/ X-2 HD Remaster, Grim Fandango Remastered, The Sly Collection, and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection are all excellent examples.

There's this perception that the vita doesn't have a lot of games. That's just not true. I've purchased more games for my vita than I have with any other console previously. The starting pricepoint of 40 dollars, the PSN sales, and the easy availability certainly doesn't help the matter; but there is clearly a ton of excellent games. The vita has an astounding diversity of games, and has plenty for anyone to love. The one area that it does lack in however,...

The existing library is good, but don't buy a Vita in the hopes of future releases, what you see is what you get at this point. But you should be able to build a solid library of games for pretty cheap.

The PS4/Vita link is pretty cool. It does better with slower paced games than faster one but it's pretty impressive nonetheless. The lack of R2/L2 can be a pain, but it's workable.
