First of all, Sony marked the Vita as legacy device. So don't expect any more greatness.
However, if you like indies, then you're golden on the Vita. Especially with the monthly PS+ games! Big AAA titles are scarce unfortunatly. Take a look at http://www.metacritic.com/feature/25-best-playstation-vita-games for a list of games that are well received.
As for compatibility between PS4 and the Vita, the lack of R2 and L2 buttons on the Vita make it hard to play any game that actively uses those buttons. If you find a game that isn't relying on the shoulder buttons, then the experience is pretty good. There is no lag, and it looks amazing. I use it sometimes to play on the can :)
