Congressional witch hunts targeting Planned Parenthood are about promoting lies, not truth
You don’t have to be pro-choice. A lot of people aren’t. But you do have to be pro-truth. We can’t base public policy on a pack of lies. And lies were the rickety basis for the cringe-worthy political theater that took place this week in a Republican-driven House committee hearing. In their tireless efforts to paint Planned Parenthood as agents of Satan, congressional zealots relied on fake charts, doctored videos, bogus statistics and mock outrage. Lies.

Texas Passed A Harsh Anti-Abortion Law. Now, We Have Proof It’s Hurting Women.
A new report released by the Texas Policy Evaluation Project — a research group based at the University of Texas at Austin that’s been tracking the state’s reproductive health policy over the past four years — finds that recent clinic shutdowns have greatly limited access to timely abortions statewide. In some cases, women had to wait nearly a month to be seen. In others, clinics had to turn women away, since they had no available appointment slots open.

Florida’s New Anti-Gay, Anti-Woman Bill May Be the Most Malicious Yet
There are very few feminist homophobes in the world, which makes sense: Those who seek to deprive gay people of their fundamental rights are rarely eager to enact laws respecting women’s dignity and autonomy. That near-truism is playing out in Florida—where, not content to debase just gays, the legislature is now considering a bill that demeans both gays and women in creative and innovative ways.

The First Legal Abortion Providers Tell Their Stories
The Cut spoke to seven doctors who practiced on the cusp of Roe; they began providing abortions before Roe or in the five years immediately following the ruling of January 22, 1973. As medical students, they witnessed women dying from illegal, often self-induced abortions; as underground practitioners, they risked their livelihoods. Since legalization, they’ve watched the rise of anti-abortion extremism, with bombings, assassinations, and attacks occurring in clinics around the country.

Three years on: My country still kills women.
Savita Halappanavar died three years ago today. She died of septicaemia. She died from a drawn-out miscarriage that went untreated too long. She died after spending a week in hospital. Savita may have died of blood poisoning, but she was killed by the Eighth Amendment to the Irish Constitution. Two decades of Irish governments have blood on their hands. They were too cowardly to legislate to protect pregnant people’s lives.

Make childbirth safe in U.S.
When I look at what women face giving birth in America today, I notice some historical issues resurfacing. We've come a long way over the past century, but there's a long journey ahead before pregnancy and childbirth are safe for every mother. What surprises me the most is that the United States is the only developed country whose maternal mortality has been consistently on the rise since 1990.
