'Avatar' sequel misses estimates, but theater executives not concerned: 'Moviegoers are waiting'

Disney's (DIS) "Avatar: The Way of Water" delivered director James Cameron his first $100-million opening weekend — but missed industry expectations of $170 million-plus. The much-anticipated sequel, which runs 3 hours and 12 minutes, secured roughly $134 million in domestic markets — tying with Warner Bros.' (WBD) "The Batman" as the fifth-highest opener of 2022, according to Comscore data. Disney, which saw shares slump 3% in early trading on Monday, had anticipated a range between $135 million to $150 million.

'Avatar: The Way of Water's' Murderous Villain Tells All

YOU’D SEEN THAT square jaw before, whether as fast-talking tabloid journalist Freddy Lounds in Manhunter, Col. Nathan Jessup of Broadway’s A Few Good Men, cowardly Ike in the Western Tombstone, or one of the FBI agents who gunned down Dillinger in Public Enemies. But it wasn’t until decades into Stephen Lang’s career, in 2009’s Avatar, that the character actor par excellence transformed into an international name.

Meghan and Harry’s Netflix Fairy Tale

“There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.” Those were the pointed, devastating words that Princess Diana used, when speaking to the BBC journalist Martin Bashir in 1995, to demolish the foundations of the fairy-tale narrative that had been spun around her and the Prince of Wales.

'Death Stranding' will get a movie adaptation

Kojima Productions is working with LA-based Hammerstone Studios to develop a movie adaptation of Death Stranding. The 2019 action game already provides quite a cinematic experience with lengthy cut scenes and dramatic expositions, which is probably part of the reason why they aren't directly adapting its story into film. According to Variety, the movie will introduce new elements and characters into the Death Stranding world, so we will see something fresh at the very least, even if they don't create a brand new story for the big screen.

Henry Cavill losing Superman role won't impact 'Witcher' recasting

So Henry Cavill won't be playing Superman after all. Does that mean there's a chance he could reverse course and come back to continue playing Geralt of Rivia on The Witcher in season 4 and beyond? Sadly, it looks like the answer to that is no. Cavill's recent announcement that he's not returning as Superman in a new DC superhero movie will have no impact on The Witcher season 4, including the Geralt recasting, EW has learned.

Disney Plus with ads isn’t a very good deal

Disney Plus’ new ad-supported tier, Disney Plus Basic, is now available, which means I’m back for another blog about what ads look like in your streaming services. The tier itself didn’t surprise me too much; if you’ve seen ads on other web videos, actually watching Disney Plus’ ads won’t feel much different. But the service’s new pricing, including a price jump for no ads, means the ad plan isn’t a very good deal.

Why Shudder Is So Vital To The Current Horror Landscape

Despite what the Academy Awards and Sight and Sound polls would have us believe, horror is and has always been the lifeblood of cinema. During the pandemic, when theaters across the country were closed, it was an indie horror movie that had fans showing up to drive-ins and keeping the box office alive. When productions across the globe had closed up shop and gone home to await further instructions, it was a horror filmmaker who found a way to make a movie entirely over Zoom and gave movie lovers something to talk about.

Marvel celebrates Stan Lee’s 100th birthday with full-page tribute

Marvel Comics is celebrating what would be Stan Lee’s 100th birthday this month with a full-page tribute in every comic. Stan Lee passed away at 95 on November 12th, 2018. The art doesn’t have an artist attributed to it, but if I were to guess, it’d be Humberto Ramos. It features Stan Lee standing at the center of many heroes and villains, looking proud, starstruck, and excited to see him. None of the characters look sad, although Ego does look like he’s shedding a tear.
