While this is still hardly a sapling of a community, can we discuss the usage of "Porn" in these tribes?

At the time of writing this, /t/EarthPorn only has 9 subscribers, so it's not too late to change directions.

I love the content that comes out of the SFW-Porn network on reddit, but I've never been comfortable with the name. I don't feel I can bring it up in casual conversation with family members or acquaintances. Does anyone else agree that we should, if we're going to create this network of high-res pictures, we should abandon the -Porn suffix? An easy fix I mentioned in this tribe's post in /t/newtribes is to call it /t/EarthPics and the like. That's just one idea though, and I'm sure we could come up with a good solution. Any thoughts?

    Tribe leader here.

I'm definitely willing to go along with what you, the tribespeople, would like to do with this. As I mentioned in the /t/newtribes post, I can't change the name of this tribe, so a new one would have to be created. For reference, that is what Voat did, and they have /v/earthpix and /v/spacepix now (among others). Since the goal here at Snapzu is to do our own thing and not just copy others, maybe we could have a different name. I think EarthSnapz, a place for snapshots of Earth, would be fitting. But if you guys prefer /t/EarthPics or a different name, that works too.

One concern I have about Snapzu is the limited number of tribes a person can lead. If I were to create a /t/earthporn doppelganger, I would then be up to 3 tribes (including /t/tax that I will not give up), 1 short of my current limit. So... I would be more open to someone else creating this alternative tribe. If you do create it, you can count on me joining, and also promoting it here within /t/earthporn.

If this new tribe is created, it would be interesting to see what we can do with the two tribes and the "Snap mirroring" feature that they are talking about in the upcoming release of version 5.2. From my understanding of this feature, a user concerned about having "porn" in their tags can just tag the alternate tribe, and then I could "mirror" the submission to /t/earthporn. If that's how snap mirroring would work, it would be awesome.

EDIT: One thing I forgot, and one point I wanted to address. For those interested in how the "porn" suffix came about, here is the explanation from Reddit. I doubt this will change anyone's minds about keeping it, but at least, that's the background.

As far as /u/Katherine's concern of it being "disappointing" to find /t/earthporn here, let me just say that it was here before me. I claimed this tribe about 24 hours ago, and when I did, there were already 4 members here, and several links which you can still see. I was torn between starting a new tribe which no one would know about and probably not join, or taking over a tribe that has a well established name. In the end, I decided to claim this tribe and let the community decide as a group how they want to proceed.

The thing is, if you have both /t/EarthPorn and /t/EarthPics operating, one of them is eventually going to be more popular than the other, more than likely it's going to be /t/EarthPorn, it's just the name everyone refers to it currently. Once you hit level 10 though, you can set a Tribe to have only certain users be able to post to it, so you could restrict the posting and make a single Snap re-directing you to /t/EarthPics.

As for the number of Tribes you can run, once you level up you can gain access to running more and more.

That's most likely what will end up happening. I have no problem with that.

Yup, and I probably will. But I think you have a pretty good idea of the number of subs in the SFW network, and there's no way that 1 or 2 people can recreate all of them, even at the highest Snapzu levels. Besides, I have other interests besides awesome pics too, that I'd like to create tribes for in the future.

Another nice tool for redirecting people is the ability to post snaps to multiple tribes – posts both here and in /t/pics are how I found this tribe in the first place, so even just having decent content in /t/EarthPics seems like a good way to go about promoting it.

Luckily, /t/EarthPics already exists! I do like the simplicity of using "Pics" as the suffix.

Edit: I noticed that it doesn't have a chief at the moment, so I went ahead and took it over.

And now that /t/EarthPics is up and running, I've created what I was after all along: /t/SpacePics!

        Come by and join :)

Joined! I set up /t/StarshipPics as well, and added the other Pics tribes to its sidebar as well. If you could add mine to yours that would be great!

(Also, in the rules section of your tribe, there's a typo under EarthPics, it should say "now" not "new"

            Done!

Aha, looks like it's been sorted out! Added you as a mod!

I agree! While I love the pictures, I don't want anything involving "porn" showing up on my screen or in my history at work, or really anywhere anybody will see it. It was enough to cause me to avoid the subreddit, and it's enough to make me avoid this tribe, too. I'd love to join something like /t/EarthPics or /t/earth or /t/nature or really anything – there are tons of available options! The "porn" just seems so unnecessary, and it's pretty disappointing to find here, too.

Awesome! I took over /t/EarthPics, which had been created but the tribe chief seems to have abandoned it. Come on over!

Great! I set up /t/StarshipPics myself, so if you could add my tribe and the other Pics tribes that would be great (added yours already to my sidebar)

Yay! I'll get you added once I get home from work.

While I don't mind the -porn suffix myself, I think that if people do want to move to a different name, it should be designed in such a way that it's easy to find similar subs. For example, on reddit you had the entire SFW Porn network that made it very easy to see what was available. I would be fine with a new suffix (or prefix), but at least something that can be consistent through a large number of related tribes.

Totally agree. It's really nice to be able to think, "Hm, I want to see high res pictures of reptiles. I wonder if there's a /t/ReptilePics?"

      • YourTaxGuy (edited 9 years ago)

It looks like it doesn't exist yet, so it's something that you can create yourself! Per my post, since I have a limit on the number of tribes I can lead, it's not one that I will make myself. But if you make it and looking to grow it, we can definitely cross promote it. I can even join as a moderator if you'd like.

        EDIT: tribes, not subs

Odd, it definitely exists. Shows me as the only member, though. I'll definitely add you to the moderators!

Edit: Wait, were you talking about /t/ReptilePics?

          • YourTaxGuy
            +2

Haha, yes, I was talking about /t/ReptilePics, which doesn't exist yet. That limit of 4 tribes per person (for low level users) is starting to get a bit annoying, no?

            • Rothulfossil
              +1

Haha, ReptilePics was kind of a joke idea. I actually really like the 4 tribes per person limit. You have to really consider which interests you have a passion for and want to lead. I'm considering making /t/WeatherPics myself, but I'll wait and consider it a little longer.

When building this network, we're gonna have to keep this in mind. On Reddit, the network was headed up by one person, which gives them way too much power. Here, individuals can start up a HiResPics tribe and from there, we can form a larger union.

As /u/YourTaxGuy mentioned, I actually think that "-snapz" would be a better suffix. Since we're really at the beginning here and we have a choice, I'd love to have a name that's meaningful to our community. Although using "-pics" makes sense from a descriptive standpoint, I'd like to have something that immediately identifies it as part of the Snapzu community. It might be a bit gimmicky, but does give some degree of individuality that "-pics" is missing.

If people are committed to using "-pics", I will of course not argue the point. But I just thought it was a good idea.

Oh man, why did you have to post that comment after I started /t/SpacePics? haha

Yeah, I actually made a /t/BotanicalPics as well... Though it looks like after one day you can leave the tribe and make a new one. What do you think? As chief of /t/earthporn, I think you'll get a fair amount of control as to where to redirect people in the future...

I'm all for going with what the community wants. As of now, only you and I have "voted" for the -snapz idea. There's been a bit more support for -pics idea.

The good thing is: we don't have to make these decisions today. I think in the long run, more folks will leave Reddit, come here, and have their say. When the community is big enough, we can make a decision then.

But I do think that it would be best to have 1 solid community rather than a bunch of fractured ones.

          EDIT: Just joined /t/BotanicalPics
