How would we know whether there is life on Earth? This bold experiment found out
Thirty years ago, astronomer Carl Sagan convinced NASA to turn a passing space probe’s instruments on Earth to look for life — with results that still reverberate today.

While Earth days get longer, NASA finds Mars days are getting shorter
One day on Mars is about 37 minutes longer than an Earth day – but it seems both planets are working to fix the gap. Data from NASA’s InSight lander have revealed Martian days are getting ever so slightly shorter, and scientists aren’t sure why.

First up-close images of Mars’s little-known Moon Deimos
The United Arab Emirates’ space probe Hope has taken the first high-resolution images of the farside of Mars’s moonlet Deimos. The observations add weight to the theory that Deimos formed together with Mars, rather than as an asteroid that was captured in the planet’s orbit, mission scientists say.

NASA's Perseverance rover loses its hitchhiking 'pet rock' after more than a year together on Mars
The rover has finally lost a pesky rock that had become lodged in its front left wheel "like a pebble in its shoe." The stone had accompanied the rover for more than half its time on the Red Planet.

Strange circular dunes on Mars spotted in these NASA photos
Planetary scientists have captured an image of near-perfectly circular sand dunes on the surface of Mars. While sand dunes across the Red Planet come in a wealth of shapes and sizes, such well-defined circles are unusual.

'Absolutely unreal:' NASA astronaut snaps amazing photo of auroras from space station
You don't often see Earth's dazzling auroras from this angle. NASA astronaut Josh Cassada just snapped a stunning shot of the light display from his perch on the International Space Station (ISS), which flies about 250 miles (400 kilometers) above Earth on average.

Hubble Found an Eerie 'Cosmic Keyhole' Deep in Space And We're in Awe
When it comes to dramatic and awe-inspiring pictures of space, few can contend with what appears to be a pic of, well, nothing at all: a fascinating image of what seems to be a hole in the fabric of space, taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.

Curiosity rover snaps close-up of tiny 'mineral flower' on Mars
NASA's Curiosity rover recently got up close and personal with a tiny, flower-like mineral deposit on the surface of Mars. The beautiful branching rock, which is just 0.4 inch (1 centimeter) wide, looks a bit like a coral or a sponge. Despite its likeness to a living organism, however, the deposit is not alive and is a fairly common sight across the Martian landscape.

The Russian Venus Landers
Given the intense temperatures and pressures of Venus, it is indeed impressive that Russian engineers were able to successfully land vehicles there 10 times during the 1970s and 1980s. These were Venera 7 to 14, and Vega 1 and 2 which deployed landers and balloon-born instrument packages.

NASA's Perseverance rover on Mars just snagged its newest rock sample (photos)
NASA's Perseverance rover continues collecting Martian rocks. The car-sized robot just snagged its fourth Red Planet rock sample, drilling another core from an intriguing stone that it first sampled a little over a week ago. "A rock so nice, I sampled it twice! Just capped and sealed my fifth sample tube, with another piece from this interesting rock. I'm doubling up on samples at some high-priority targets like this one...
