I use Paint Tool SAI for most of my artwork. I like that it's lightweight and is simple. No fancy giant interfaces that take five minutes to load.
Photoshop I use sparingly, only if I need a tool that Paint Tool SAI doesn't offer, or for making graphic designs.
Illustrator I use a ton too, more-so for when I need to vector over some sketches I did in Paint Tool SAI earlier.
I also like using MS Paint for quick funny doodles when I don't even feel like loading Paint Tool SAI up.

Cool. Looks like GIMP is probably my best bet at the moment, to at least try and build so core skills before thinking about spending money.
