What software do you guys use?

I'm coming over from /t/blender to take a look at some of this stuff, and I'm quite interested in what programs you guys are using to create your artwork? I've seen lots of Blender artists using some kind of digital painting software to touch up their pieces so I would quite like to try it out. Are there any decent free (or at least free trial) programs out there?

To keep up the content, here is the last render that I currently have access to (I'm abroad) that I haven't yet posted to Snapzu. It's a jet based on the Lockheed Blackbird jet that I made a while ago for a daily3d challenge.

I use Corel Painter though it is not free and can be pricey for the pro version, what I would do in your situation is try out Gimp. It's free and works on all major platforms.

I use GIMP but only for color corrections, levels, brightness, maps and other basic stuff. Haven't really thought about using it to paint into my renders which is what I was thinking about. I have seen some really cool stuff where people have made, say, a robot in blender and then used some cool effects and added some buildings or whatever around it by painting.

Sorry I don't know of any special effects tips. Whenever I use a 3d model I paint over it like how a traditional painter paints over a sketch.

Ok well that's actually interesting. I have never been able to communicate my ideas to paper in real life, but for some reason in blender I find it so much easier. So maybe I could use Blender as a way to get me started with an idea...

Well I'm glad I was able to offer something! A lot of times I use 3d models to figure out the lighting or shapes in complex poses.

I use Paint Tool SAI for most of my artwork. I like that it's lightweight and is simple. No fancy giant interfaces that take five minutes to load.
Photoshop I use sparingly, only if I need a tool that Paint Tool SAI doesn't offer, or for making graphic designs.
Illustrator I use a ton too, more-so for when I need to vector over some sketches I did in Paint Tool SAI earlier.
I also like using MS Paint for quick funny doodles when I don't even feel like loading Paint Tool SAI up.

Cool. Looks like GIMP is probably my best bet at the moment, to at least try and build so core skills before thinking about spending money.

It's not free per se (lots of 30 day trials out there for it), but there are plenty of ways to get the full version for free - Paint Tool SAI. Whether this can be used to fit your needs, I'm not sure. Some time ago Photoshop CS2 was offered (FROM Photoshop's site) for free. I doubt it's there anymore, but likely VERY easy to come across these days because of that. Other than that, I stick to whatever free software comes with my tablet or the like. Sorry if I couldn't be of more help!
