Save

I've been hearing a lot about Dune. Is it worth reading?

I have absolutely no idea what Dune is even about save that it's supposedly really good, hard to get into and a bit tough to decipher (I heard there are made up words there??), but ultimately a great book.

Now, without spoiling anything, can you guys tell me what this book is about and if it's good enough to read? I can look up the synopsis on wikipedia or whatever, but maybe a fan can give me a better explanation. I really want to get back into reading, and I figured that after a few months of not reading this would be one of the books I'll tackle. You know, get back in the scene and all.

Feel free to discuss, but again... no spoilers!

Absolutely it’s worth reading. Mind you, I haven't gotten very far into the series. Since there’s no descriptive language, I had a few false starts getting through it. Well worth it, once I did, though. Not sure that spoilers are a huge concern given the epic scope, and I can’t promise you won’t come across any, but I can point out a few things about how relevant and important it is.

    Hell, yes, it's worth reading.

Never mind how important Dune is to the evolution of science fiction (although it is). Never mind about its immediate relevance, on multiple levels, to life right now (although this will strike you).

Read it because it's a ripping yarn, in a very fully, deeply imagined universe, with characters that will stay with you.

That's what I liked about it too, it's just a great memorable story. It was the first book that I would stay up way too late at night to read.

i hadn't realized there were that many...and I have read a lot of them...though many are not from the original author.

I'll go one step at a time lol. I read online that I should read two sequels after Dune and end with God Emperor since it's supposedly better than Dune itself.

What is amazing to me is the connectivity through the many years, both in the actual writers, and the eons in the story. It left a mark on me as a young reader.

What do you mean, the scope?

Yes. I was amazed at the capacity to tie all of the eons that this these writers tied together. The lights that followed them, the intrigue. The Bene Gesserit thread, amazing

So what is Dune about? I'm not sure if I should be expecting Star Wars, Lawrence of Arabia or Tolkien.

There are aspects of all 3 of those stories plus add in some King of Thrones and that would sum it up for me.

Yes, the mixing of the future with modern day things based on human interaction from our past.
