    YO! I'm a geography grad student too; Fluvial Geomorphology, third year Ph.D.! I totally get what you're saying; pulling out bare earth DEM's or finding pulling out sediment load with remote sensing data helps make me feel really accomplished the day I make them (my background is in field work, not GIS, so it's an acquired skill set for me).       Nice!! I'm focusing on GIS and watershed modeling, so I spend 100% of my time in a computer lab... wish I could get out and do some field work!! Hope to find a job after grad school where field work will take up at least half my time :)
