If you could change one rule in a sport/competitive game what would you change? Why?

Tried to phrase it to be more inclusive of MLG and non-sport activities. A friend of mine suggested making halfcourt or greater shots in basketball worth 4, and that if in American football you have a kickoff go through the goalposts it should be 1 additional point.

What would you change to make games more interesting?

There should be a rule in Basketball where, if a player takes more than two steps without dribbling the ball, it's foul.

On a more serious note, I'd get rid of ties in football: If you exhaust overtime, you play sudden-death until there's a winner.

There was something like that in Football, "Golden goal" they called it, but for some reason it did not stick. I think it's better than a penality competition which has little to nothing to do with the football game itself.

Sorry for the confusion, I'm talking about the NFL. American Football.

Oh well. I didn't think American Football was as goalless as soccer can be.

There were some leagues that already tried to football without ties, it doesn't had anything to the sport, it even subtracts in cases were teams try to win by attrition instead of actually trying to play well.

I didn't know American Football had ties. I never cared much about it and all most American friends complain about ties in soccer/football so it seemed "obvious" that the most popular sport in America didn't have them. TIL

American Football: Field Goals from 55+ yards are worth 4 points. This would place a premium on kickers that can kick far and accurately, and perhaps bring some new strategy into the game.

Football: Radical idea, but I'd say add another player. This way teams can heavily favor offense or defense if they so please.

Basketball: Less timeouts. It's extremely annoying to have potentially 12 times be called within the last 30 seconds of a half.

Baseball: No DH. I vehemently believe that of you're on the field, you also have to bat (fight me, AL fans).

Hockey: 4 on 4 be the default. A power play would result in an additional 5th player being added, as opposed to a player being removed. This would simply just make the game even more exciting to watch, and perhaps increase its popularity.

Taking your American Football idea to basketball, I've always believed that shooting from half-court should be worth four-points. I think it might make some of the mid-court interaction more interesting because then people wouldn't be running to the other side as quickly because they can't just imagine that guy who is really good at shooting half-court shots.

Go one step further and make it 5 points from inside the opponent's paint.

BTW picklefingers, you're my invite grandfather. You invited the person who invited me. :)

Sometimes we already do things like this in games, like removing the limit on how many times you can tap the ball on one side in Volleyball, when we play them with friends. I think that using rules like that make it more fun. Conversely though, loosening up rules might make games less fun to watch.

Also, this is a really good question!

    Other rules for example:

Adding the ability to accumulate debt in Monopoly. (This can lead to some... unorthodox strategies)

Variable game length depending on how much time you have is a useful one. (This one might make sports hard to watch though.)

Official Competitive Pokémon: NO F#CKING MINIMIZE CHANSEYS!!!! Seriously, you do that in comp you are a horrible person. Also, allow event legends in official tourneys.

Not even sure what that means. I just like this guy passionately yelling about Chansey.

Minimize raises evasiveness, so it makes it harder for the other Pokemon to hit Chansey. Since Chansey usually has ungodly Special Defense, ridiculous amounts of health, and a move that heals back half of it's already high health, it takes a REALLY long time to defeat unless you've got a something that's super effective against normal-type Pokemon.

I thought Evasion Clause was standard?

I think that any play that rolls around on the floor after a foul has to sit out for 5 minutes. This would put a quick end to flopping and any player that is hurt could get a recovery time without slowing the game down.

I would add more contact to soccer, so that players can't dive after being brushed up against.

For hockey: When a fight breaks out, the referee must ref it as if it were a professional fight. It allows for players to blow off steam, and it would be extremely entertaining.

I have a simple solution to the designated hitter rule in major league baseball: Get rid of the DH, but allow each team to skip the pitcher's spot in the batting order. In other words, the leadoff batter goes to the plate after the #8 hitter. We'd eliminate the pain of watching pitchers bat, while increasing the number of plate appearances that real batters get.

    In hockey:

Remove the shootout and just replace it with a 20 minute 3 on 3. Its a lot more exciting and leads to a tonne more shots.

Remove the Trapezoid rule. Marty is gone, we're safe from his tyranny now and maybe goalies will learn how to stickhandle again.

In Soccer[Football] leagues/tournaments that both record everything AND have carry-over yellow cards, giving yellow cards for egregious diving/injury faking. These cards are given out by an officiating committee watching on television/game replay. (These cards are given after the game ends, so a player can't be removed from a game because of them, only miss the next game)

MMA: I wish the UFC would allow knees to downed opponents. Too many fighters drop their knee to get out of a bad situation.

Field hockey: no substitutions on penalty corners. A pointless rule which changes nothing.

Soccer: I would make it so that in every game no just elimination games there has to be winner, the way I would want the winner to be decided is in extra time, and for extra time to be golden goal(first team to score wins) as opposed to just playing 2 more halves. I would want this rule to be made just so that we can have a winner and not be disappointed by a good game only to have no team come on top.
