    Chopping an onion. I slice both ends off first.

      Isn't that the right/best way, though? Cutting the ends off means the outer layers are free to be easily removed.

        Apparently you're only supposed to take a small amount (just the tendrils) off the root end. http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/how_to_chop_an_onion/

        Actually, the "best" technique is this one. I'm extremely sensitive to onions and pretty much cried every time, but I don't since I adopted this technique.

        Plus, it's much easier in the long run, and a lot faster, cause the onion doesn't fall apart.

          Has anyone tried chewing gum while cutting onions? I've heard several times that is supposed to help.

      I do this too - I didn't know it was considered wrong.
