What are your plans for the summer?

I need some ideas. I need to travel and/or do more fun things this year as last year was stale and boring.

As for me: Vacation! To the beach, to the mountains, and some roadtrip to a yet-to-be-decided location. And also online classes, most likely. Which is less of a blast, but I've got to get all the credits I can since I'm aiming for early graduation.

As for what you should do: I recommend that you get lost. Just up and leave. Like, of course take your phone and everything, but don't you dare use the GPS feature on it. Don't plan a set route (a set destination is okay, so long as it's sufficiently far away), just literally go where ever the road takes you. Pick a highway--better yet, pick a random backroad--and just gooo! You really don't even need a car for this, the Greyhound will take you far. If you're older, you can take things as slow as you want, or if you're young, you can chase the thrill of your life. If you're lonely, then you can take a buddy, or if you're adventurous, then you can make friends wherever you go. It's all about the freedom with this type of thing.

Seriously, all of my favorite Summer trips have been like this. I drove from South Carolina to Niagara Falls and back in 3 days one time, stopping everywhere and detouring every other turn just because I felt like it, and it is one of the best vacations I've ever had. I mean, sure, all of my friends think I'm crazy for doing stuff like this, but if last year was so "stale and boring" for you, then what's wrong with a little crazy? :)

If you're lonely, then you can take a buddy, or if you're adventurous, then you can make friends wherever you go.

I personally recommend the latter. We don't talk to anyone (seriously enough) when we travel with other people, the best acquaintances I made were when I was travelling alone. You really get the chance to know yourself better, discover strengths you didn't even know you had, meet awesome people from all over the place.

I also recommend staying either in youth hostels (despite the name, there's no age restriction) or even hospex networks, à la Couchsurfing, Hospitality Club or BeWelcome. Or if your budget is tight, consider exchanging some services against shelter and food, with the likes of WWOOFing or WorkAway.

Here's more detail about the hospex sites I mentioned and a few more.

      Have fun!

Heading to Seattle, Mt. Ranier, and the Olympic Peninsula in WA for a vacation in late June. Anybody got suggestions for things not to miss while in those places? I've been to the peninsula once, almost 20 years ago, and enjoyed the Hoh River Rainforest and the Pacific beaches, so we'll be revisiting those. This time, though, we'll also be in the Port Angeles/Lake Crescent area for a few days, and I'll have more time in Seattle than the one afternoon I spent exploring the pier area way back when.

Hoping for a trip to the South of France, to stay in a friend's house there.

Damn that sounds really nice! It's been almost 10 years since I was in France, absolutely loved it there! Have a baguette, some nice cheese and a glass of wine for us when you're there :D

They just can't make them like that here in sunny old Blighty.

work lots of hours. I work in construction in Alaska, so our 'work season' is very limited.
