If not, then boxes! I always rejoiced whenever my family bought a new washer or refrigerator, because that meant that I would have a giant new box to hide with my pet kitty in! :3
Lego, books and pens/pencils. Yeah, I know, it's more than one thing. Books are not toys, but what else is it, when it keeps a young hyperactive boy quiet for a few moments? I was a spoiled brat, in a way. Those were the things that kept me busy, mostly because it was bad weather outside or way too late to be outside. Playing with whatever crossed my adventurous paths. Actually, my mom sent me back outside if my clothes weren't dirty. "You're squeeky clean. What have you been upto, young man? Get outside and go silly!" :-)
that is beyond adorable. and totally what my kids do as well (though they dont care which way the blocks face i think... at least.. i haven't noticed anything)
IF we can choose video games, then I'm going to pick the NES with Zelda and Final Fantasy. Otherwise, I'm definitely going with Ninja Turtles, must have had a hundred of them at one time, most met the lawnmower or fire works. A few met their demise by the hands of the sun and magnifying glass, and more still got Toy Storied and put up at yard sales. Man I wish I still had those things to pass down, they were way cooler than today's weird turtles.
My bike(s) mostly, but also blocks and figurines. I had a huge collection of wooden blocks that filled two old Army footlockers. I built castles with whole towns around them, or spaceships or whatever. Then I populated them with Star Wars and GI Joe figures.
I had a fake carebear cousin that my eldest son has now adopted.
Also a huge (for a toddler) Eeyore toy. he was also fake though.. i know cause he was green xD But who cares, i used to pretend to be riding him and all sorts :)
My golly and my bike. Golly was the boss of all my toys (still is), and my bike had solid rubber tyres so I didn't have to worry about punctures. We went everywhere, my bike and I.

If we're counting video games, then GBA and SNES.

Always loved building cars with my legos and using them on my road mat.
Interesting, I would have to go with Legos as well. I had a rather large collection all in one big box. Still have it somewhere!
My pellet gun

Homemade ramps for our bikes. Find a board or something somewhere? Get some rocks, prop it up and time for another jumping contest!
Erector Set (and my sister's Easy Bake Oven)

A kangaroo with a removable joey in her pouch.
Also pipe cleaners that i used to make into all sorts of animals.
