When I was 20, I went on a two-month couchsurfing trip across the USA (South, Midwest, and Pacifc Northwest). It was my first time really travelling on my own (I'd started flying alone when I was still in primary school, but I was only alone for the flights), and the trip gave me the confidence to start travelling on my own to other countries, too. I also met so many amazing people on the way, and it expanded my world and got me more interested in understanding diverse perspectives. I'm not a fan of hyperbole, but I think "transformative" really is the only way I could describe the trip.

I went on a cruise to Hawaii when I was 17. It wasn't so much the trip as it was the transformation. Really it was my first time feeling like an adult on an adult vacation. Plus it was 80 degrees there and -7 at home.

Hawaii with a close friend. Loved it so much.

My friend and I toured Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and The Czech Republic right after grad school. We did the backpack/hostel thing, but rented a car instead of taking the train (it was a bit cheaper for a short trip). We had no set plans...just rough ideas of where we wanted to visit. We used stories and recommendations from other hostelers to guided us.

I went on a kind of 'tour' with my family a number of years back. Went to France. Drove around for hours every third day or so to stay for a day or more in a different city or town. It was quite interesting, despite me not knowing the language. Good food, good towns, nice (enough) people...

Even though I went to a solid number of places with my family, it was the trips to Europe and France that I enjoyed most. Followed closely by those to Colorado.
