This is what happens to a country with a society that is massively polarized, and with an extremely biased wealth distribution. First they elect populist autocrats, then the country slowly goes down the drain for a while (especially if they have lots of resources) then it collapses and becomes what you read in this article.
I'll let you decide in what step of the process the US is now. But I'll add that the longer it goes, the chances of stopping it go down fast.
