Liberals tried that, and saw conservatives demonizing the label "progressive" as well. There's no way to win if you play their game, so the appropriate response is to refuse to play. I am a liberal and will not apologize for it or shy away from it. Rather than bow to propaganda that attempts to vilify my opinions and proposals, I will embrace the label and demonstrate that the propaganda is wrong rather than my beliefs.
