But even if these worries about confiscation seem politically misplaced, and even they are encouraged by political advocates (psychological persuasion is, after all, what political advocates on all sides do), that doesn’t mean they are fake or easily dismissed. Any attempt to reform gun laws will have to grapple with this fear of government.

I think this is a healthy fear to have- I'd even argue it as a survival trait. But even if it isn't- this is a serious undertaking to begin. Guns have been a part of the 'American Fabric' (though I'd say more correctly the fabric of the United States) since before the days of the Wild West. Today its glorified in our TV, movies, music and even mannerisms.
