How pessimistic. I'm a grumpy asshole and still think that the Pope has done a pretty damned fine job so far. He's the head of a two thousand year old church. It's not like he can change everything at the drop of a hat and they're something completely different the next day- he's seeding changes which will hopefully grow and modernize the church in the future.

Is his job to keep adherents? You betcha. Don't mean he has to be a rigid, judgmental asshole while doing so. By embracing things like abortion, marriage annulment, homosexuality, and how the church governs itself, he's helping modernize ecclesiastical thought. he's far more liberal than any other pope that i'm familiar with.

I'm afraid I agree with her. Yes, he's the head of a two-thousand year old Church, but they're not a democracy. He's effectively a monarch, and if pissing off the council would put his life in danger then what's the point of the Swiss Guard?

He has and continues to espouse lovely platitudes and encourage people to be more like his ideal, but when it comes to actual reform he needs a little less conversation.

The problem is that large scale overhaul types of reform breed radicalism and can lead to a splitting of the very institution he is trying to advance. Basically the rule of unintended consequences.

And I was raised catholic and pretty much abandoned it as soon as I was able. However I will say what he is saying and doing are a positive thing for the church and he should keep it up. he is exactly what Roman Catholicism needs. Not that it is making me consider returning to the church, but at least its heading in the right direction.

If the notion of protecting the innocent or following the law breeds radicalism, then so be it. Such an organization shouldn't be tolerated in the first place.

Yes, Pope Francis is helping the Church reform its image in the public view. I remain skeptical of the notion that he's also reforming the Church itself.
