The oceans are warming faster than climate models predicted
As I have said many times on this blog, if you want to know how much “global warming” is happening, you really have to be able to measure “ocean warming”. That is because more than 90% of the excess energy coming to the Earth from greenhouse gases goes into the ocean waters. My colleagues and I have a new publication, which better characterizes this heating and also compares climate model predictions with actual measurements. It turns out models have under-predicted ocean warming...

New Study Finds Quicker Upper Ocean Warming than Previous Thought
A new study by Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) proposed a new estimate on upper 0-700m ocean warming rate from 1970 to 2014: 0.55 ± 0.14 × 1022 J yr−1 (168TW).

How much longer will people deny climate change?
Until the cost of denying it exceeds the cost of mitigating it.
Until it smacks them in the face and it's too late. Deniers are like the frog in the boiling pot scenario, they will keep denying until they boil.
On a scale of 1 to 10, we're fucked.
And it looks like the warming oceans are already having an effect on weather patterns, as well. A large region of warmer than average water in the Pacific may be behind why the California drought and the Pacific Northwest heatwaves have worsened to such considerable magnitudes.

What's frightening is that the oceans have been absorbing the heat due to natural oceanic and climate patterns. Eventually, it'll be the atmosphere collecting all the excess heat, resulting in much faster warming.
