I think the instructions contained in religious texts urging people to behave in ways we now consider atrocious are evidence enough of that. Certainly there are more modern and moderate interpretations that reject literal readings of holy text, but they're revisions of that religion and in no way invalidate the existence of those instructions nor the literal interpretations that persist through today.
