If they were unable to land with the bombs still attached, the only options were to drop the bombs or crash the aircraft. They did this because they had to not because they wanted to.
Truthfully I think it was a coincidence. The reef is pretty huge and not labelled on any map/gps/etc. They panicked and dumped it and then heard the backlash afterwards.
