If they were unable to land with the bombs still attached, the only options were to drop the bombs or crash the aircraft. They did this because they had to not because they wanted to.
They could probably have dodged the reef though. That's why people are furious.
Could be, and people are furious for good reason. At the same time, were they thinking of this at all? In that situation? Would you be?
Truthfully I think it was a coincidence. The reef is pretty huge and not labelled on any map/gps/etc. They panicked and dumped it and then heard the backlash afterwards.
It stinks that it happened I hope they were smart enough to have the bomb unarmed
