I only have macs and linux at home. I was horrified when we audited Windows 10 telemetry. The telemetry can really only be bypassed if you use W10 enterprise with a domain with a carefully crafted set of GPOs. And that's Windows 10. I haven't used MS Office for a very long time. Libre Office gets better and better and always had more stable documents.

I doubt US government departments would appreciate Microsoft control of windows OS and I can't see any other governments wanting their desktops controlled by a company beholden to the US government.

I'd not thought of this. Thing is,once they have control,if they don't like your ad blocker poof it's gone! They can monitor everything. Total control is indeed a scary thing. I have never trusted Microsoft any further than I could throw an elephant and knowing they plan to do this is not reassuring in the least. I just use Ubuntu and I have since XP screwed up one time too many and I could not take it anymore.

Another reason I'm glad I made the switch to Linux.

Been doing this for years. Our teeny Linux forum has predicted ages ago Microsoft would do this. And this would also explain why Dell has taken an interest in providing more Ubuntu laptops...They knew this was coming and they are getting ready for the influx.

Windows patching was always chancy, but with Windows 10 you’re more likely to have trouble when you patch than you are to avoid problems. And isn’t that a heck of a note?

So, with this track record, do you want to pay good money to let Microsoft maintain your desktops for you? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

I hope Ubuntu does not do this.

I've been playing a bit with Fedora in my spare time. Gaming is what worries me though. While Steam has some Linux support, it's not comprehensive.

That could change, you just never know.

I guess it’s time to start using Linux.
