Unfortunately it's hard to do what you really, truly love for a living. Generations ago people tended to choose a career and stick it out until retirement. Nowadays people are losing their jobs more frequently and as a result go for whatever job/career they can get at the moment and slowly transition into something else, and the cycle continues. There are no guarantees in this economy both as an employee and an employer.
