Messenger No Longer Requires A Facebook Account
Facebook wants even the people who hate Facebook to use Messenger, so it’s opening the option to sign up for its chat app without an account on its social network. Users can sign up with just a first name, last name, and phone number, starting today in the US, Canada, Peru, and Venezuela before the feature comes elsewhere.

This is actually really exciting - I hate Facebook, but miss the messenger. It's a lot more convenient than just texting someone. I will test this out today and see how it works!
*Edit - So I downloaded it to my phone and set up an account without Facebook. Unfortunately, the search for a user function doesn't seem to be working yet, and the vast majority of my friends haven't given Facebook their real phone number. So this makes the app pretty much useless for me right now, hopefully they find a fix for this issue soon.
