For me, getting regular exercise is far more about building the habit, than actually doing exercise. Repetition makes you mentally (and physically) expecting to do more. You begin looking forward to lacing up your shoes and hopping on that bike, or walking down that trail.

Getting something like a Fitbit and getting active feedback is amazing. It's awesome to look up and see the numbers. Like your own personal cheering section.

Although not specifically mentioned in the US Surgeon General’s “Step it Up” programme to promote walking, wearables such as those from Jawbone, Fitbit and others, are one way of tracking the number of steps walked in a day. For most users of these devices, the focus is on getting to the magical 10,000 steps a day. This isn’t really the best target to use however as to achieve the intensity guidelines to achieve a health benefit, it is only the steps that were above a certain pace that count.

I think building the habit of exercise and good health is the first step that should be pushed on people. People are weak willed these days. You have to almost trick them off their couch- then once you've gotten them off the couch you have to worry about entertaining them.

Just run people! The Couch25k program is awesome no matter what your ability.
