Playing any sport is a personal decision and the dangers: inherent. "They knew the risks," goes the refrain. And if, "No one forced them to play football," = "No one held a gun to their head," of course, I cannot disagree. But I do challenge your use of the word: "willingly," some perhaps, not all.
No way, I watch football. The author does too. Thoughtful discussion, like the one in this comment section, are essential to, as you stated: "The league is changing for the better because of the exposure and research," I'm thankful for that too.
