Why Are Americans So Afraid?
In December 2016, at a rally in North Carolina, a 12-year-old girl looked at then candidate Donald Trump, "I'm scared," she said. “What are you going to do to protect this country?” “You know what, darling?” Trump replied. “You’re not going to be scared anymore. They’re going to be scared.”

Because fear is a great tool to control people.
I don't really think Americans are living in fear. I think they are being told they are living in fear.
You hit the nail on the head. This tactic is getting played out and what worked 15-20 years ago, isn't going to work moving forward, or at least it wont be as effective. I guess to keep the same effect, a bar will need to be raised.
Which is a scary proposition. That's when you get your own government doing crazier and more shocking things to convince people that the threat is real.
Point well made. I feel the same way. My fear is not of a terrorist coming to get us. My feat is our own government (GOP) attacking us by demolishing the medical care system, the last shreds of our safety net,and so on.
