That's a pretty bad fail.
People have worse fails every day and many get killed because of it, and we have been driving cars for a century. Imagine how good self driving cars will be in 20 years with how quickly they're getting better now.
Yep, we have a lot of drivers that "fail" to understand the simple concept of emerging technologies.
