    No, it most likely won't. Careful blood monitoring of levels is required because the therapeutic dose isn't far from the toxic dose. Simply becoming dehydrated can tip you over to toxicity. So tossing in lower levels of lithium so as not to poison anybody isn't going to do anything but waste it.

    Unless the discovered link (correlation /= causation) has controlled for population mental health levels, amount of sunlight, pollution, general health, income/poverty levels, and several dozen other things that don't immediately come to mind.
