Besides whatever you might think of both of them, how is being an intellectual a bad thing? I always hear people taking about not voting for someone because they seemed "too smart". Who do you want then to lead your country? An imbecile?

Autocrats dislike intellectuals. The head of Gestapo once said "all intellectuals should be gathered and put in a mine and blown up". Today it seems like the trend in politics are in favor of autocrats.

Most politicians dislike educated people because ignorant people are easier to manipulate. But people shouldn't agree with them.

That depends on what you think education is, as opposed to what education should ideally be. When it comes to brass tacks, given what I see as education in the world around me, 'education' isn't protective against manipulation, so much as a gold star awarded for subjectivity to it.

I guess I'm a bit idealistic (as usual). I should say "critical thinkers" instead of "educated people", but to me the most important goals of education are to teach critical thinking and to foster curiosity. Otherwise it's conditioning, brainwashing or indoctrination, not education.

Certainly not as qualified as a street thug who's honed diplomatic skills boast of one way helicopter rides.
