You mean like everything else?
Short story time. Before I left Venezuela, there was this massive inflation of house prices. Considering how fucked up living in Caracas is, it was a bit surprising that houses would run for millions of dollars.
Eventually we figured out (by doing a background check on a potential buyer of a friend's house) that real estate in Caracas was being used to launder drug money by the drug cartels. So, similar story.
Eventually the cartels became the government though, so that brought the house values down to market price (very close to zero). This is what eventually happens when the rich become the government.
