    The family had said they planned to sue the city for $75 million.

    Where on earth does that number come from?

      IANAL but I think that number is based on a punitive basis. So its not so much based on how much money he would have made, it is supposed to be a severe enough penalty to maybe get the cop fired or make the city give out a few pink slips to make amends.

        Sure. My point was that still seems like an incredibly large number. For example, that's a little over $2000 per officer in the entire NYPD. Alternatively, its enough to staff an additional 1500 police officers for a year, counting just the starting salary of an officer.
