Well, I really don't like going too deep into these matters as it's obviously my own opinion and I don't wish to offend anyone, especially people of faith, but to me it seems that religion was a necessary element, an almost key evolutionary step in ancient life that lead us to the present. Ever since the dawn of man, religion was and still appears to be Humanity 1.0... but before you get all up in arms, let me explain!
By Humanity 1.0 I'm merely implying that religion was responsible for some sort of order, because during those times the law that we know today was extremely hard to uphold due to the lack of finger print analysts, DNA sequencing, blood splatter specialists, detectives, police officers and a fair and effective court system. I guess its safe to say that in those times, you were sort of on your own. You had a weapon, you had a family and a hut and you had to defend it, from a LOT of things that can kill you. If your neighbor raided your onion patch and jacked your onions and you tracked him back to his hut, there was not much you couldn't do and still get away with it. Faced with those choices, religion essentially guided you on possibly figuring out a better solution, caving his head in out of pure rage was no longer your only option. Sure there was a lot of things religion did wrong over the past thousands of years, but like everything in this world, religion can be corrupted and used for evil just as much as it can be used for good.
Now, as humanity progressed over time, and people generally became smarter, more educated and less savage to themselves the need for these fear mongering religions declined, however now that each deeply rooted and established religion has a mind of its own, with its own leadership and "memberbase" these institutions don't want to go quietly into the night. They fight for their right to exist like any living organism, corporation or government institution (like the DEA) would. I would also like to mention that ma...

They fight for their right to exist like any living organism, corporation or government institution (like the DEA) would. I would also like to mention that many people are still extremely terrified of what happens after we depart, some accept the fact that death is death and that's it, others will choose a faith that best suits them and their outlook on life. Religion still has a place in this world, its a deep rooted comforting concept almost as old as sitting by the fire and enjoying the warmth and safety it provides while wolves drool over you from a distance.
What I meant to say with "we should witness something spectacular in the coming years", is that I believe the religions we know today will not remain as they are for much longer, there is simply too much science, technological advancements and rapid progression towards a unified society that the concept of multiple religions, the wars over beliefs and just the ridiculous amount of in-house corruption will not be able to survive. People will naturally move forward based on the information available to them, and thus, leave behind outdated models based on old world problems. I feel, that already we are witnessing the raise of humanity 2.0, and I find that extremely exciting.
They do indeed, and fight they will. I have no problem offending the religious anymore than I have a problem offending those who believe in ghosts, the Mothman,Bigfoot, etc.
