Scientists rush to freeze plant DNA before 'sixth extinction'

As the world enters into a sixth great extinction, scientists are racing against the clock to save genetic evidence from plants around the world. An ambitious project launched Wednesday to collect the genomes of the planet's major plant groups within the next two years and put them into deep freeze. The project is part of the Global Genome Initiative, which aims to gather and preserve the DNA of all life on Earth in cryo-storage facilities.

      The greatest threat facing the majority of endangered species is habitat loss. As human settlements, industry, and resource accumulation increase, the amount of wild, unaltered habitat on earth is shrinking. Additionally, the commercialization of many species (fish and palm oil, for example) are putting additional pressures on the global ecosystem.

        From "cloud forests" .. "Estimates for climate-related extinctions are all over the place," he said. "There is no consensus, and we need to have better answers."......."effects right now are subtle"..that may well be an overstatement of fact(s)................... As to overhunting/overfishing and physical loss of habitat, hardly related to global warmings/sixth extinction.......That's precisely how it's "alarmism"
