As a fairly casual but long time viewer of this show (maybe once a week on average), I've seen many people misspell their answer in the Final Jeopardy and have their answer correct. It was never really about spelling, but about the right answer, so unless the word is butchered and unreadable or not distinguishable it's usually ruled correct (if the answer is correct).
Maybe if they misspell it but not change the actual pronunciation of the word. In this case the actual word sounds wrong. Had he spelled it "emencipation" or something, they may have ruled it as a correct answer.
